Synopsis
Twenty-Fifth Bam is a boy who has spent his entire existence in the darkness of a cave beneath a colossal structure: the Tower. His only companion was Rachel, a girl who told him stories about the world inside the Tower — a universe where those who climb the floors can obtain anything they desire: wealth, power, glory. When Rachel enters the Tower, abandoning Bam, he forces open the Towers doors to find her, becoming an Irregular — someone who enters the Tower uninvited, an extremely rare and feared occurrence.
On each floor, climbers (Regulars) must pass varied tests: fights, puzzles, races, team challenges. Bam discovers he possesses extraordinary potential and the ability to absorb others techniques. He befriends memorable characters: Khun Aguero Agnes, a brilliant strategist and son of one of the Ten Great Families who govern the Tower; Rak Wraithraiser, an alligator warrior obsessed with hunting; and many other climbers with diverse motivations.
The Towers universe reveals immense depth: the Ten Great Families, the Rankers (those who reached the top), the Guardians of each floor, FUG (a revolutionary organization), and King Jahad who conquered the Tower millennia ago and whose power is nearly divine. Bam discovers that his existence is tied to a prophecy and that his nature as an Irregular makes him a potential threat to the Towers established order.
Themes and Influence
Tower of God is a work of rare narrative ambition in the webtoon format. SIU has built a universe with its own magic system (Shinsu, a substance present everywhere in the Tower), its complex social hierarchy, its political factions, and hundreds of characters. The manhwa explores themes of betrayal, ambition, power, and solitude. The relationship between Bam and Rachel — where the one he believed was his only ally betrays him repeatedly — is an atypical and disturbing dramatic engine. Tower of God was one of the first webtoons to receive an anime adaptation (by Telecom Animation Film in 2020), contributing to the international visibility of the Korean webtoon format. The work is often compared to Hunter x Hunter for its narrative complexity and worldbuilding.
