Synopsis

Synopsis

In a contemporary world where dimensional portals called Gates appeared ten years ago, individuals with supernatural powers — Hunters — fight the monsters that emerge from them. Hunters are ranked from E-rank (weakest) to S-rank (strongest), and their rank is determined at awakening and never changes. Sung Jinwoo is an E-rank hunter, nicknamed the weakest hunter of humanity, who risks his life in low-level dungeons to pay his mothers medical bills.

During an expedition in a double-layered dungeon, Jinwoo and his group are trapped in a deadly sanctuary with sadistic rules. The sole survivor (barely), Jinwoo awakens in the hospital with an interface floating before his eyes: a System resembling a video game that assigns him quests, grants experience, and allows him to level up — a unique ability in a world where Hunters power is normally fixed.

Jinwoo begins training ferociously and evolves from an E-rank hunter to a warrior of unimaginable power. He discovers the Shadow Extraction ability, allowing him to resurrect defeated monsters and enemies as shadow servants under his command, gradually building a personal army. His meteoric rise attracts the attention of Hunter guilds, governments worldwide, and threats of extraterrestrial origin: the Monarchs, cosmic beings who manipulate the gates as part of an eons-long war against the Rulers of light.

Themes and Influence

Solo Leveling is the work that defined the System/leveling genre in manhwa and Asian web novels. The primary appeal lies in the protagonists cathartic power growth: from a weak, despised character, Jinwoo becomes a force of nature, each fight more spectacular than the last. The work explores themes of sacrifice, determination, and the solitude of power — Jinwoo becomes so powerful that he inevitably distances himself from other humans. Dubus art (the artist passed away in 2022) is unanimously praised for its action sequences of exceptional readability and dynamism, particularly in the vertical scroll format unique to webtoons. Solo Leveling paved the way for international recognition of manhwa and was adapted into an anime by A-1 Pictures in 2024.
