Synopsis
The story begins in 1880 England when Dio Brando, an ambitious and cruel young man, is adopted by the noble Joestar family. Jonathan Joestar, honest and chivalrous, discovers Dios dark designs, as Dio uses an Aztec stone mask to become an immortal vampire. Jonathan masters Hamon, a breathing technique channeling solar energy, to fight Dio. Their ancestral rivalry establishes the central conflict of the entire saga.
Each part of JoJo is a self-contained story with its own protagonist bearing the nickname JoJo. Part 2 (Battle Tendency) follows Joseph Joestar fighting the Pillar Men in the 1930s. Part 3 (Stardust Crusaders) introduces Stands, psychic manifestations with unique powers, and follows Jotaro Kujo across Asia and Africa to confront a resurrected Dio. Part 4 (Diamond is Unbreakable) is an urban thriller in a small Japanese town. Part 5 (Golden Wind) plunges into the Italian mafia. Part 6 (Stone Ocean) takes place in an American prison. Parts 7 (Steel Ball Run) and 8 (JoJolion) reboot the saga in an alternate universe, with Part 9 (The JoJoLands) currently in publication.
The Stand system, introduced in Part 3, became the series identity. Each Stand possesses unique and often abstract powers: stopping time, canceling gravity, turning things into bombs, erasing time. Battles are not clashes of brute force but strategic duels where intelligence and creativity prevail.
Themes and Influence
JoJos Bizarre Adventure is a celebration of individuality, courage, and destiny. Each part explores different themes while maintaining the common thread of the Joestar bloodline and human will against evil. The work is deeply influenced by Western culture: Italian fashion, classic rock (Stand names are musical references: Star Platinum, Crazy Diamond, King Crimson, Killer Queen), Renaissance art, and cinema. Araki created a unique visual style that has influenced fashion, contemporary art, and countless manga. JoJo has become a worldwide meme phenomenon, its poses and dialogue recognized well beyond the manga community.
