Synopsis

In 1930s Korea under Japanese rule, Count Fujiwara, a forger, devises a plan to marry wealthy Japanese heiress Lady Hideko and seize her fortune. He places young pickpocket Sook-hee as Hideko's handmaiden to manipulate her. But over time, a passionate relationship develops between the two women, completely upending the Count's plans. The story unfolds in three acts, each revealing a different perspective on the same events.

Adaptation and Transposition

Park Chan-wook transposed Sarah Waters' Victorian novel into the context of the Japanese colonization of Korea, adding a political and cultural dimension absent from the original. The conflict between Korean and Japanese culture, the question of language and identity, considerably enrich the narrative. The director preserved the novel's three-part structure, with each section offering revelations that radically change the reading of preceding events.

Direction
