Shoplifters (Manbiki Kazoku, literally 'the shoplifting family') is a Japanese film directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, released in 2018. This intimate and heartbreaking work won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, crowning the career of one of world cinema's most sensitive filmmakers.

Synopsis

Osamu and his son Shota are returning from a shoplifting session when they find a little girl, Yuri, left alone in the cold by her negligent parents. They bring her home, where grandmother Hatsue, sister-in-law Nobuyo, and young Aki already live. This makeshift family scrapes by in a cramped little dwelling, surviving through petty theft and the grandmother's meager pension. But the discovery of secrets about the true bonds between family members threatens to shatter everything.

Kore-eda's Cinema

Kore-eda is often compared to Yasujiro Ozu for his ability to capture the details of everyday life with extraordinary emotional depth. With Shoplifters, he pushes his exploration of family even further, questioning what makes a real family: blood ties or bonds of the heart? His naturalistic style, with actors who seem to live rather than perform, gives the film a rare authenticity.

Themes

The film explores structural poverty in Japan, a subject rarely addressed in mainstream Japanese cinema. It questions legal and social definitions of family, the morality of theft by necessity, and society's ability to protect its most vulnerable members. Kore-eda refuses simplistic moral judgment: the characters are simultaneously victims and responsible, loving and imperfect.

Reception

The Palme d'Or at Cannes 2018 was awarded by unanimous vote of the jury chaired by Cate Blanchett. The film was a commercial success in Japan and internationally, totaling over $68 million at the worldwide box office. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and received the Best Asian Film prize at the Asian Film Awards.

Legacy

Shoplifters helped draw international attention to social inequality in Japan and inspired public debate about invisible poverty in developed societies.
