Synopsis

Infernal Affairs

Infernal Affairs (Mou gaan dou) is a Hong Kong film directed by Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, released in 2002. This virtuoso crime thriller has become an undisputed classic of Hong Kong cinema and one of the most influential Asian films of the 21st century.

Synopsis

Triad boss Sam sends young Lau Kin-ming to infiltrate the police, while Superintendent Wong sends young Chan Wing-yan to infiltrate the triad. Ten years later, both men are deeply embedded in their respective covers. When an anti-drug operation fails, both sides realize they have a mole within. A race against time ensues where each infiltrator must identify the other before being unmasked himself.

Production and Context

The film was made during a renewal of Hong Kong cinema after a decade of commercial decline. Andrew Lau and Alan Mak co-directed with a modest budget, relying on the screenplay's intensity rather than spectacular effects. The title references the Buddhist concept of uninterrupted hell (avici), where souls are condemned to suffer indefinitely.

Direction and Style

The film stands out for its taut narrative and masterful parallel editing, alternating between the two protagonists living mirrored situations. The urban photography of Hong Kong, between gleaming skyscrapers and dark alleys, creates an atmosphere of permanent paranoia. The score uses distinctive musical motifs for each character, reinforcing the central duality of the narrative.

Themes

Infernal Affairs explores identity, loyalty, and moral duality. Both protagonists are prisoners of their mission, unable to live authentically. The film questions the boundary between good and evil, suggesting both sides mirror each other. The tragic dimension lies in the fact that both men aspire to the same thing: escaping their double life.

Reception and Sequels

The film was an enormous commercial and critical success in Hong Kong and across Asia. It spawned two sequels, Infernal Affairs II (a prequel) and Infernal Affairs III, forming a complete trilogy. The film won numerous prizes at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

Legacy and The Departed

Martin Scorsese purchased the rights for an American remake, The Departed, released in 2006 with Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, and Jack Nicholson. The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture, ironically Scorsese's first win in that category. The Hong Kong original, however, remains preferred by many cinephiles for its darker ending and more refined execution.
