Synopsis

Zhou Zishu was the leader of the Window of Heaven, an organization of assassins serving Prince Jin. Weary of bloodshed and haunted by guilt, he leaves the organization by inflicting upon himself the 'Seven Torment Nails,' which will progressively block his meridians and kill him in three years, but grant him complete freedom in the meantime. He wanders through the jianghu (the martial arts world) disguised as a drunken old man, seeking to enjoy his last days.

His peace is disrupted by Wen Kexing, a handsome, eccentric, and dangerously charismatic man who attaches himself to him insistently. Wen Kexing presents himself as a simple spectacle enthusiast, but hides a formidable identity: he is the Master of Ghost Valley, a haven for criminals and outcasts. The two men are drawn into a conspiracy surrounding the Glazed Armor Armory, a legendary treasure coveted by every sect in the jianghu.

As Zhou Zishu and Wen Kexing investigate the murders of the Armory's former guardians, they gradually discover each other's secrets. Wen Kexing pursues revenge linked to the destruction of his parents by the jianghu masters, while Zhou Zishu confronts the consequences of his bloody past. Their deep bond — friendship, loyalty, and unspoken feelings — becomes the driving force of the narrative.

Themes and Influence

Word of Honor renews the wuxia genre by centering it on the relationship between two complex and wounded men rather than on pure action. The work explores redemption, cyclical vengeance in the jianghu, and the question of what makes a 'righteous man' in a corrupt world. The subtle adaptation of the danmei novel's romantic subtext sparked international enthusiasm, making Zhang Zhehan and Gong Jun global stars.
