Synopsis
In 1998, South Korea is hit hard by the Asian financial crisis. The national fencing team is dissolved due to lack of funding, and Na Hee-do, a passionate and determined 18-year-old fencer, sees her Olympic dream collapse. Meanwhile, Baek Yi-jin, 22, son of a once-prosperous businessman, finds himself penniless, abandoned by his family torn apart by bankruptcy, and works as a newspaper delivery boy.
Their paths cross when Yi-jin delivers the newspaper to Hee-do's mother's house. Despite the age and situation difference, a sincere friendship develops between these two young people whom the crisis has forced to grow up too fast. Hee-do fights to join a new fencing team and competes with Ko Yu-rim, a talented rival who will become her best friend. Yi-jin studies to become a sports journalist, finding purpose in work amid his upended life.
The drama follows their journey from 1998 to 2001, through training, competitions, first kisses, and the painful choices that adult life imposes. The narration alternates with the present, where Hee-do's adult daughter discovers her mother's diary and the memories of a love that marked her life.
Themes and Influence
Twenty-Five Twenty-One is a reflection on loves that do not survive the transition to adulthood — not for lack of feeling, but because life carries people in different directions. The drama uses the 1998 financial crisis as a metaphor for external forces that shatter youthful dreams. Fencing becomes a symbol of personal struggle and discipline in the face of adversity. The series was praised for its authentic portrayal of female friendship (between Hee-do and Yu-rim) and for daring an ending that privileges emotional truth over a conventional happy ending. Kim Tae-ri and Nam Joo-hyuk delivered memorable performances.
