Synopsis

Synopsis

In 1735, during the Qing dynasty, Wei Yingluo enters the Forbidden City as a simple embroiderer to investigate the mysterious death of her elder sister, a former lady-in-waiting to the Empress. Endowed with sharp intelligence, an indomitable character, and a sharp tongue, Yingluo quickly distinguishes herself from other maids through her ability to solve problems and foil plots.

She gains the trust of Empress Fucha, a noble and benevolent woman who takes her under her protection. But the imperial harem is a battlefield where concubines compete with stratagems to gain Emperor Qianlong's favor. Noble Consort Gao, Consort Chun, and other rivals attempt to eliminate Yingluo, who fights back with unexpected cunning and ferocity. Unlike traditional harem drama heroines, Yingluo is never passive: she strikes first, manipulates her enemies, and refuses to be victimized.

After the tragic death of Empress Fucha, Yingluo vows to avenge her and undertakes a vertiginous ascent through the harem hierarchy, rising from maid to the Emperor's favorite. Her complex relationship with Qianlong — a mix of manipulation, mutual respect, and genuine love — forms the emotional core of the series' second half.

Themes and Influence

Story of Yanxi Palace revolutionized the harem drama genre by offering an active, vengeful, and strategic heroine rather than a virtuous and submissive one. The work sparked debate in China about feminism and the representation of women in historical fiction. The series broke streaming records on iQiyi with over 15 billion views and became a global phenomenon, searched on Google more than any other show in the world in 2018. The meticulous recreation of the Forbidden City, the sumptuous costumes, and the precise historical references were also praised.
