Synopsis

Synopsis

In 1609, during the Joseon dynasty, a being from another planet lands on Earth. Endowed with extraordinary abilities — telekinesis, superhuman speed, the power to freeze time — he takes the name Do Min-joon and lives among humans for four centuries, changing identities with each generation. Cold, distant, and disillusioned with human nature, he patiently awaits the return of the comet that will allow him to return to his planet, scheduled in three months.

His life changes when Cheon Song-yi, the biggest star on Korean television, moves into the apartment next to his. Song-yi is loud, impulsive, vain, but also vulnerable and endearing. Despite four hundred years of voluntary solitude, Min-joon finds himself irresistibly drawn to this woman who reminds him of a young girl he loved in the 17th century. Their love story is complicated by a countdown: Min-joon must leave Earth in three months or be trapped forever.

Meanwhile, Song-yi is caught up in a media scandal and a murderous plot orchestrated by Lee Jae-kyung, the son of a powerful conglomerate hiding dark secrets. Min-joon uses his powers to protect Song-yi, risking the exposure of his true nature.

Themes and Influence

My Love from the Star blends science fiction and romantic comedy with an originality that redefined the genre. The work explores the loneliness of immortality, the fear of attachment, and the choice between cosmic duty and human love. Jun Ji-hyun created an archetype of female character — the clumsy but charismatic star — that influenced dozens of K-dramas. The drama had a massive cultural impact in China, where fried chicken and beer ('chimaek,' Song-yi's favorite combination) became a fashion phenomenon. The series is considered the catalyst of the second Hallyu wave in Asia.
