Synopsis
Geu-ru is a 20-year-old young man with Asperger's syndrome who works with his father at 'Move to Heaven,' a company specializing in cleaning and organizing the belongings of deceased persons (a service called 'trauma cleaning' in Korea). With exceptional memory and rigorous adherence to procedures, Geu-ru approaches each assignment with meticulous professionalism, treating the deceased's belongings with a dignity that deeply touches families.
When his father suddenly passes away, Geu-ru's guardianship is assigned to his uncle Sang-gu, a former boxer and ex-convict who has no affinity with his nephew and even less with the business of cleaning death scenes. The father's will stipulates that Sang-gu must work with Geu-ru for three months to gain guardianship and inheritance. Initially reluctant and awkward, Sang-gu finds himself gradually transformed by the stories he uncovers.
Each episode follows a different case: an elderly person who died alone, a migrant worker who died in indifference, a victim of domestic violence, a teenager whose last days reveal a secret. Through the objects left behind — letters, photos, toys, notebooks — Geu-ru and Sang-gu piece together the lives and regrets of those who have passed, offering loved ones a form of closure.
Themes and Influence
Move to Heaven is a profound reflection on lonely death ('godoksa' in Korean), a major social phenomenon in South Korea. The drama makes the invisible visible: ordinary lives that fade away without witness, stories that risk being forgotten. The work also addresses neurodiversity with sensitivity, showing Geu-ru's unique abilities without reducing him to his diagnosis. The relationship between uncle and nephew, moving from misunderstanding to deep affection, is the emotional core of the series. Tang Jun-sang in the role of Geu-ru was praised for his nuanced performance.
