Synopsis
Woo Young-woo is a 27-year-old woman on the autism spectrum who has an IQ of 164 and an eidetic memory. First in her class at Seoul National University's law school, she lands a position at the prestigious law firm Hanbada. In a legal world dominated by social conventions and nonverbal communication, Young-woo must navigate interactions she finds confusing and exhausting.
Each episode presents a different legal case that Young-woo approaches with her unique logic and unexpected associations — often inspired by her passion for whales. Her colleagues react differently: Lee Jun-ho, a warm court employee, becomes her ally and love interest; Kwon Min-woo, an ambitious colleague, perceives her as a threat; and Jung Myung-seok, her kind supervisor, guides her with patience.
Beyond the cases, the drama explores the complex relationship between Young-woo and her father, who raised her alone and hides a secret about her mother. The question of her mother's identity and the circumstances of her abandonment become a major narrative thread. Young-woo must also prove that her abilities are not reduced to her autism and that she can bring unique value to the law.
Themes and Influence
Extraordinary Attorney Woo opened an unprecedented dialogue about autism and neurodiversity in South Korea, a country where disability remains heavily stigmatized. The drama avoids the traps of 'inspiration porn' by showing Young-woo's real difficulties (sensory overload, social misunderstanding, loneliness) while celebrating her strengths. The whale metaphors — whales as symbols of connection, freedom, and communication — poetically enrich the narrative. The series was a meteoric international success on Netflix, propelling Park Eun-bin to global stardom and inspiring conversations about inclusion in professional settings.
