Synopsis

Synopsis

In a world where superpowers (Quirks) have become the norm, professional hero work is one of the most prestigious careers. Izuku Midoriya, nicknamed 'Deku,' is one of the rare individuals born without a Quirk. Despite this, he holds boundless admiration for All Might, the number one hero and symbol of peace. After an act of bravery against a villain, Deku catches All Might's attention, and the hero reveals his secret: his Quirk, One For All, can be passed from person to person.

All Might chooses Deku as his successor and passes One For All to him. Deku enrolls at U.A. High School, the most prestigious hero academy, joining Class 1-A alongside classmates with varied Quirks: Katsuki Bakugo, his childhood friend turned explosive rival; Shoto Todoroki, son of the number two hero Endeavor, haunted by a traumatic family past; Ochaco Uraraka, who wants to become a hero to financially support her parents; and many others.

The students face escalating threats: the League of Villains, led by Tomura Shigaraki, disciple of All For One, All Might's nemesis. All For One, the supreme villain, possesses the power to steal and grant Quirks. The conflict intensifies across seasons, pitting hero society against a villain coalition that questions the very foundations of that society. The final battle forces Deku to fully master One For All and confront his own doubts.

Themes

My Hero Academia explores what it means to be a hero beyond superpowers: courage, sacrifice, and the will to protect others. The work questions institutional heroism, showing that the professional hero system can create as many villains as it defeats. The Deku-Bakugo rivalry is a remarkable arc about toxic friendship, ego, and reconciliation. Themes of legacy (All Might to Deku), responsibility of power, and inclusivity run throughout the series.

Production

Kohei Horikoshi's manga was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from July 2014 to August 2024, spanning 42 volumes. The anime adaptation by Bones debuted in April 2016, with Kenji Nagasaki directing the early seasons. The series is known for its high-quality action scenes, notably the Deku vs. Todoroki fight at the sports festival and the All Might vs. All For One confrontation. Three theatrical films complemented the series: Two Heroes (2018), Heroes Rising (2019), and World Heroes' Mission (2021). The anime concluded in 2025 with the seventh season.

Cultural Impact

My Hero Academia became the shonen that best fused manga traditions with Western comics, attracting a massive international audience. The manga surpassed 90 million copies. The series popularized superhero culture in Japan while bringing manga sensibility to Western comics fans. Cosplays from the series are among the most popular at worldwide conventions.
