Synopsis
Shigeo Kageyama, a shy and socially awkward middle schooler nicknamed 'Mob' (meaning 'background character' in Japanese), possesses immense psychic powers that he constantly suppresses. After a traumatic childhood incident where he hurt his younger brother Ritsu with his powers, Mob resolved never to use them against others. He works as an assistant to Reigen Arataka, a self-proclaimed psychic who is actually a charismatic fraud but fundamentally decent person, using Mob's real powers to solve ghost cases.
Mob's emotions are measured by an internal counter from 0 to 100%. When he reaches 100%, his powers explode uncontrollably according to the dominant emotion (sadness, anger, gratitude). Across three seasons, Mob confronts malevolent spirits, an esper organization called Claw seeking world domination, and above all his own insecurities. He joins the body improvement club, tries to get closer to his classmate Tsubomi, and learns that psychic talents will never replace personal effort and human connection.
Themes
Mob Psycho 100 is a fundamentally humanist work that deconstructs the fantasy of power. In a genre where power usually defines a protagonist's worth, Mob considers his abilities irrelevant to what truly matters: becoming a good person, making friends and growing up. Reigen, despite his charlatanism, transmits authentic life lessons about kindness, respect for others and the fact that psychic powers do not make someone special. The work also explores social pressure on teenagers, the relationship between innate talent and earned effort, and the importance of failure as a driver of growth.
Production
ONE's manga, published on Shogakukan's Ura Sunday site from 2012 to 2017, is drawn in a deliberately rough and minimalist style far from commercial manga standards. Bones studio transformed this challenge into creative opportunity: under the direction of Yuzuru Tachikawa (seasons 1 and 2) then Takahiro Hasui (season 3), the animation adopts a free and experimental style, mixing varied techniques (watercolor, oil painting, whiteboard animation, rotoscoping) for each action sequence. Three seasons totaling 37 episodes were produced from 2016 to 2022.
Cultural Impact
Mob Psycho 100 was hailed as one of the best anime series of the 2010s-2020s by both critics and audiences. Bones studio's animation became an industry reference, with the series' fight scenes regularly cited among the most inventive ever produced. Reigen achieved cult status in Japan and internationally, often considered one of anime's best supporting characters. The work helped cement ONE's reputation as one of contemporary manga's most influential authors. The third season delivered a universally praised conclusion, rare in a medium where disappointing endings are common.

One Punch Man
Anime series adapted from ONE's manga, redrawn by Yusuke Murata. Produced by Madhouse (season 1, 2015) then J.C.Staff (season 2, 2019), it follows Saitama, a hero so powerful he can defeat any opponent with a single punch, which leaves him in a state of deep existential boredom. A brilliant parody and deconstruction of the superhero genre, the work is also a commentary on the search for meaning and meritocracy.
