Synopsis
Yuji Itadori is a high school student with exceptional physical abilities living an ordinary life in an occult research club. When his classmates inadvertently open a cursed object — a finger of the legendary curse Ryomen Sukuna — malevolent spirits attack. To protect his friends, Yuji swallows the finger and becomes Sukuna's vessel, the King of Curses. Sentenced to death by jujutsu authorities, he receives a reprieve: he must consume all twenty of Sukuna's fingers before being executed, in order to permanently destroy the curse.
Yuji enrolls at Tokyo Jujutsu High under the guidance of Satoru Gojo, the most powerful sorcerer in the world, a man as laid-back as he is formidable. There he meets Megumi Fushiguro, a serious exorcist who masters shikigami summoning, and Nobara Kugisaki, a fierce and independent fighter. Together, they face increasingly powerful curses while uncovering the dark secrets of the jujutsu world.
The plot darkens with the Shibuya Incident arc, where a coalition of curses and renegade sorcerers orchestrates a plan to seal Gojo and plunge the world into chaos. The devastating consequences redefine the balance of power and push every character toward desperate choices. The ensuing Culling Game forces sorcerers into a death match orchestrated by an ancient enemy.
Themes
Jujutsu Kaisen explores the value of a 'proper death' and the meaning of existence in the face of violence. The work questions institutional justice through the corrupt traditions of the jujutsu world. The strength of character bonds — friendship, mentorship, rivalry — contrasts with the inherent cruelty of their world. The series distinguishes itself through its willingness to impose real consequences on its characters, refusing narrative shortcuts.
Production
Gege Akutami's manga was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump starting March 2018 and concluded in September 2024 with 271 chapters and 28 volumes. The anime adaptation by MAPPA debuted in October 2020, directed by Sunghoo Park (season 1) then Shota Goshozono (season 2). Season 2, particularly the Shibuya Incident arc, was hailed as a peak of television animation, featuring some of the most impressive action sequences ever produced for the small screen. The prequel film Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (2021) was a major commercial success.
Cultural Impact
Jujutsu Kaisen became a pillar of the 'new generation' shonen alongside Demon Slayer and Chainsaw Man. The manga surpassed 90 million copies in circulation. The series helped cement MAPPA as one of the most important animation studios in the industry. The character Gojo Satoru became a pop culture phenomenon in his own right, transcending the anime community.
